To measure progress on coastal wetland conservation and related Great Lakes health, we must determine the current extent, or baseline area, of these diverse coastal wetlands within each of the Great Lakes and the river systems that connect them. Initial model development and calibration will be developed for five training geographies, one within each of the five Great Lakes. Once the working model has been developed based on these training geographies, the model and analysis will be scaled up for the Lake Erie Basin and Huron to Erie Corridor (including Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair and Detroit River), which is an area that aligns with the goals of Objectives 2 and 3 of the Framework to Advance Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Conservation (U.S. and Canada) developed by the Great Lakes Coastal Assembly. This project work will ultimately support the development of an approach for basinwide application.
