Description: In collaboration with a Sea Grant funded proposal, the SEFSC and partners invested in the development of a 2012 Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Atlantis model (from 2012-2014), with the intention of using model outputs to provide managers with strategic advice. The utility of using Atlantis, a spatially-explicit, biogeochemical model, is to inclusively represent an extensive suite of ecosystem processes that can influence fisheries productivity and safe harvest rates across the GOM. To date the SEFSC/ GMFMC have not applied the 2012 GOM Atlantis model to provide strategic advice. Two major reasons for this are: 1) the SEFSC lacked staff proficient with the Atlantis software and, 2) though the model has been published in peer-reviewed literature, it has not been formally reviewed for use in management. Thus, the objective of this SEFSC EBFM funded project is to: 1) update data inputs and recalibrate the model, archiving in a NOAA Tech Memo; 2) conduct an internal SEFSC review of the model followed by an external review (by CIE reviewers and Gulf SSC/Council staff); 3) use the peer-reviewed Atlantis model to assess Gulf shrimp productivity scenarios and evaluate the long-term biological, economic and ecosystem-level tradeoffs. The long-term goal is to provide simulation outputs to the Council, for strategic planning purposes.
