A stock assessment update of the Guam bottomfish will be conducted through 2022 by PIFSC scientists. The deep-slope fishes of Guam support a small yet valuable boat-based fishery. The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council’s fishery ecosystem plan for Guam includes 13 bottomfish management unit species (BMUS) that have traditionally been assessed and managed as a species complex. The update assessment will use the same methodology from the previous benchmark assessment (2019) and will be used to estimate biomass and stock status through time. Stock status will be evaluated against MSY-based reference points described in the Fishery Ecosystem Plan for the Mariana Archipelago.
